FCO: LISBON TREATY

The European Parliament will debate and vote on the Lisbon Treaty on 20 February. Commenting on the European Parliament's report on the Treaty, Minister for Europe Jim Murphy MP said:

"I welcome the European Parliament's important scrutiny of the Lisbon Treaty. Their report supports the British Government's position that the Treaty is a positive step for the European Union and its member states. It confirms that the defunct Constitution has indeed been abandoned1, that there are substantial differences between the defunct Constitution and the Lisbon Treaty, and that the EU is not going to become a "superstate", as euro-sceptics like to claim."
