In a response to the announcement by the UN Secretary General today that he has appointed Navanethem Pillay as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Foreign Office Minister Lord Malloch-Brown said:
"I very much welcome this appointment. The High Commissioner for Human Rights plays a vital role in helping the UN and its member states deliver their human rights obligations and in drawing attention to important human rights issues across the globe. The choice of Ms Pillay is an excellent one."
