Manchester to pilot economy push

Alistair Darling
Greater Manchester authorities will receive new powers

Greater Manchester has been chosen to
pilot a scheme aimed at driving the UK's economy through the regions,
the government has announced.

Chancellor Alistair Darling unveiled the plan in his annual budget speech to promote economic investment.

As part of the initiative Greater Manchester will be given new
devolved economic and political powers to help make key decisions.

Leeds has also been selected to host the pilot scheme.

The pilots will be overseen by government ministers and
will draw on recent work from the Manchester Independent Economic
Review to agree joint priorities to boost the economy.
