Cross Party hopes for raising US debt Limit

Democrats and Republicans have expressed cautious optimism about the chances of raising the US debt limit by Tuesday and averting possible default. The gross public debt increases or decreases as a result of the annual unified budget deficit or surplus.

As of June 29, 2011, the Total Public Debt Outstanding was $14.46 trillion and was approximately 98.6% of calendar year 2010's annual gross domestic product (GDP) of $14.66 trillion

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell commented that there was "a level of seriousness with the right people at the table" as talks continued. Senior Senate Democrat Richard Durbin spoke of "a more positive feeling".

During the uncertainty of being able to pay troops in Afghanistan, Admiral Mike Mullen who as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff currently on a visit to southern Afghanistan, said he did not know whether that would be the case if the US fails to raise the limit by 2 August. Democrats and Republicans have so far reject…

Sunday Mirror Phone Hacking

Evidence of possible phone hacking at the Sunday Mirror newspaper has been found by the BBC's Newsnight.

The programme spoke to a journalist who worked on the paper in the past decade who claimed to have witnessed routine phone hacking in the newsroom.

The source said celebrities including actress Liz Hurley and footballer Rio Ferdinand were targeted.

Trinity Mirror said its journalists work within the criminal law and Press Complaints Commission code of conduct.

Also it has emerged that Lord Leveson, the judge who will lead the hacking inquiry has said he had attended functions with Rupert Murdoch's son-in-law - but that he had informed Prime Minister David Cameron of this before the appointment was announced.

'Dark arts'

The allegations about the Sunday Mirror were detailed by a source who told Newsnight: "One afternoon in the newsroom I saw Liz Hurley's phone being hacked and a reporter listen to her mobile phone messages and take a note of what was said.

MI5 to improve

MI5 is enhancing working procedures after accepting calls from the coroner at the inquests into the 7/7 London bombings, which killed 52 people.
Lady Justice Hallett had called for improved record-keeping and procedures for showing photographs to informants.

They were among nine recommendations she made for MI5, the emergency services and Transport for London.

MI5 said it had invested in a new IT system to allow higher-quality photographs to be sent to agents.

The agency had come under fire during the inquest for having cropped a clear colour photograph of plot ringleader Mohammad Siddique Khan so badly it could not be shown to an informant.

MI5 said it had used "wet film" in 2004 and a scanner but was now using better technology to avoid a repeat of the situation.

"This has improved the overall quality of the photographs we show to our agents."

However, it admitted the system was "not yet perfect".

LulzSec & Anonymous after Murdoch!

"After having hacked Rupert Murdoch's flagship news website, thesun.co.uk, and redirecting its readers to a spoof front page and pilfering its email servers, Anonymous' unofficial mouthpiece, Sabu, has revealed that the group is 'sitting on [the sun's & NOTW's] emails' with a press release from Anonymous & possibly more coming in a few hours. While that website has already been taken down, the email bounty is likely to be potentially more damaging with Sabu releasing details of two of the Sun's top three employees, Rebekah Wade and Bill Akass, the former editors of the Sun and News of the World respectively as well as Lee Wells & Danny Rogers, Editorial Support Manager at News International and Sun Online Editorial Manager respectively, as a taster of what's coming next."

Whole of Government Accounts 2009-10

Image
The Treasury has today published an unaudited summary of the Whole of Government Accounts (WGA) for the year 2009-10. The Government made available the key balance sheet analysis contained in this summary to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) to enhance their analysis of the sustainability of the public finances in their first ever Fiscal Sustainability Report, also published today.

This is the first ever set of publication of information for the whole of the public sector, covering over 1,500 public bodies, and has been 10 years in the making. The full, audited accounts will be published in the autumn and will be the most ambitious in scope produced in any country.

The publication of this summary represents a leap in the transparency of reporting the Government’s future liabilities. It represents a snapshot of the Government’s financial position on a commercial accounts basis. Intergration of Tax & NI Systems

The Government has issued a call for evidence as part of its consideration of the integration of the operation of the income tax and National Insurance contributions systems, announced at Budget 2011. This is a preliminary stage of consultation, and aims to build a strong evidence base on the burdens to employers of having to operate two different systems. Responses to this call for evidence will inform the Government’s proposals for reform, on which it will consult in the autumn.

The two systems are currently operated entirely separately and the Government believes that greater integration of the two has the potential to remove economic distortions, reduce burdens on business, and improve fairness for individual earners.

The call for evidence document poses 14 questions, the majority of which focus on the burdens employers and payroll professionals face in paying income tax and NICs through the Pay As You Earn system. For example, how much staff time and other resource is required to m…

Growing Sunflowers in Fukushima

Activists are asking people to plant and grow sunflowers with a goal of de-contaminating soil made radioactive in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. A group of young entrepreneurs and civil servants are asking volunteers to grow sunflowers, then send the seeds to the Fukushima area where they will be planted next year to help clean the soil of contamination.

Fast Company magazine reports that entrepreneur Shinji Handa has sold some 10,000 packets of sunflower seeds to Japanese people at a cost of $6.00 apiece to launch the project. “We will give the seeds sent back by people for free to farmers, the public sector and other groups next year,” said Handa. Besides decontaminating the soil, the organizers hope that the project will promote concern for the afflicted area,…

The News of The World Last Edition

When Rupert Murdoch, his media empire under fire over a phone-hacking scandal, swept into his London headquarters on Sunday from the United States, the message was clear.

Murdoch, sporting a white panama-style hat, sat in the front passenger seat of a red Range Rover intently reading a copy of the final edition of the best-selling newspaper he had closed only hours earlier to try to contain the spreading crisis.

"The World's greatest newspaper 1843-2011," said the front page, held up for all to see. "Thank you and goodbye."

Newspaper staff had departed, amid scenes of cheering and emotion at the same London complex, in the early hours. Many employees saw themselves as having been sacrificed by Murdoch to save his broader business interests.

But Murdoch was signaling he was not bowed. He has already made clear he has no intention of yielding to criticism and removing senior executives, nor of giving up his proposed multi-billion-dollar buyout of British broadcaster…

Steam of life....

A film about a group of naked men in sauna’s across finland might seem an unlikely film to watch, perhaps not one which captures the idea of a real tear jerker; but Joonas Berghall and Mika Hotakainen’s "Steam of Life" is different it’s touching audiences and has won awards through its powerful well edited fly on the walll, or rather camera in a sauna in letting real men talk with friends about their hopes and fears.

Variety had the following to say about the film : "Whoever says "boys don’t cry" should watch "Steam of Life".

Another Critic wites: "Mika Hotakainen interviewed a dozenFinnish men as they sat in saunas and steam rooms, opening up to eachother and the filmmaker team about hardships they’ve faced in life….What is revealed in Steam is that in moments ofemotional turmoil and crisis, people benefit the most merely by being heard."http://steadydietoffi…
